Guidelines for eFiling

The change to standardized Case Types, Case Categories, and Filing Codes has helped reduce the confusion in submitting eFilings in different jurisdictions. However, there are still differences between them.

The following are general guidelines that will provide invaluable assistance when you are submitting eFilings into jurisdictions that are unfamiliar to you:

Initial Filings for a Case

  1. Lead Document or Attachment - If you find a filing code that matches the document-type you are submitting, that document most likely needs to be submitted as a lead document in a filing. For instance, if you are filing an original petition and you see that there is a filing code for the Case Information Sheet, the Case Information Sheet needs to be submitted as a lead document.
  2. If You Do not See a Filing Code for the Case Information Sheet - it needs to be filed as an attachment to the petition or as last page of the petition.
  3. If You Do not See a Case Initiation Fee Display after You Select the Filing Code - you will need to go to the Court Services area and check Filing Civil Case. The case initiation fee will now display in the fees area. Additionally, the Civil Case Information Sheet and any Exhibits will need to be filed as separate lead documents.
  4. Most jurisdictions allow you to attach the Civil Case Information Sheet as the Last Page of the Petition or Application to Probate - so you do not need to submit it as a separate filing.
  5. If You Do Not See a Filing Code for Your Lead Document - select No Fee Documents, Not Answers as the Filing Code.
  6. Case Initiation Fee Under Court Services - If you find a Case Initiation Fee option under the Court Services section, you will need to upload exhibits, the Case Information Sheet, affidavits, etc., as lead documents.

Subsequent Filings in a Case

  1. If You Do Not See a Filing Code for Your Lead Document - select No Fee Documents, Not Answers as the Filing Code.
  2. Filing Orders - Select the Proposed Order Filing Code option, upload a cover letter as the lead and attach the order to it.
  3. Requesting Citations, Writs, etc. - Choose the Requests Filing Code, upload the request form as the lead document. Be sure to go to the Court Services section and check the appropriate request so your filing will be properly billed for the required fee.
